Overzicht

Probably no battle of the Second World War captured quite the imagination and interest as did the actions in the area of Arnhem between 17th and 26th September 1944. The defence of the northern end of the road bridge by an exhausted force battered on all sides by a numerically superior enemy, is a major feat of arms. The subsequent actions at Oosterbeek must also rate as one of the most significant actions undertaken during the closing stages of the European campaign.

This book is not an account of the action; more column inches have been written on that subject, and by those far better qualified than this author. Instead, this account seeks to pay tribute by recording information about the organisation of the air and ground forces not always available readily. It also lists, believed to be for the first time, all British, Dutch, Polish and US gallantry awards and the citations for almost all the British medals. Interestingly, it also details some recommendations which were unsuccessful. Finally, the account seizes on the contribution and degree of losses suffered by the Polish Parachute Brigade, and the aircrews and RASC air despatchers who tried so hard to keep the defenders supplied and who suffered severely in doing so, and lists a Roll of Honour of these men.
