Between August 1943 and March 1944 the R.A.F. dropped over 30,000 tons of bombs in nineteen raids on Berlin in a desperate effort to end the war by flattening Germany's capital city. But although terrible suffering was inflicted on the people of Berlin, the raids failed to bring about a German surrender - and the R.A.F. lost over 600 aircraft and their crews.
