No Surrender at Arnhem

During the fighting at Arnhem Robert Peatling of 2 Para became cut off from his Battalion, he had escorted a group of German prisoners to the Police Station. On the 19th September 1944 he was ordered by a Military Police Sergeant to surrender. Instead, he took advantage of the general confusion to slip away to the attic where he remained hidden ...alone! Despite the lack of food and companionship he never wavered in his decision not to surrender.

On the 31st October he was discovered by a Dutch Policeman who suggested he change into civilian clothes and leave with a Dutch Resistance man. He lived in Arnhem with the Resistance group until 31st December when it became very dangerous. On the 17th April he met the Canadian army and was flown home after surviving seven months behind enemy lines.
