The International Institute for Sugar Beet Research (I.I.R.B.) was founded in order to coordinate and promote efforts in the agricultural aspects of sugar beet research. It was founded at a time of deep economic depression by men who had an eye to the future. An outstanding degree of co-operation between beet growers and manufacturers resulted, and this laid solid foundations for survival and provided impetus for improvement in sugar beet production. Gradually, a structure was established for the attainment of the declared objectives. This is currently stated in the Statutes, namely the creation of an organization enabling 'those concerned in the field of sugar beet research to meet regularly and to establish international co-operation'.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the I.I.R.B. the Administrative Council decided to review, by publishing the present booklet, the outstanding events and important technical developments which have affected sugar beet growing in the course of the last fifty years. These have been influenced in many ways by I.I.R.B. activities. The rationalization and improved profitability that have occurred in the growing of this important agricultural crop are matters for justifiable pride. Each chapter of our publication reflects the extensive co-operation within the Study Group involved and, consequently, some individual views. We are most grateful to the authors, translators, and all those involved in the production of the booklet.

If these contributions serve to remind I.I.R.B. pioneers of happy moments of joint achievement, and serve to inform all of us of the course of past progress, part of its objective will have been fulfilled. But this is not all: it is hoped to illustrate to following generations the way in which achievements may be made, particularly in research, by open and trustful co-operation beyond the boundaries of the different disciplines, languages and countries involved. In this way, in the future as in the past, serious problems besetting all sides of sugar beet cultivation may be solved by joint effort.
