Pictorial History of the German Army Air Service 1914-1918

For the first time in one volume a picture story of the birth and death of the first Luftwaffe, and an account of some of the achievements it obtained in its short life span. Many of the techniques used and lessons learned were applied in a later Luftwaffe led by men who had served their apprenticeships in the open cockpit wire-braced biplanes of two decades before. 240 original photographs, many of them never previously published, trace the growth of the German Army Air Service from its first hesitant steps to the powerful force that was ground into oblivion by the Treaty of Versailles.

The author, while resident in Germany, got to know many ex-members of the German Army Air Service who provided much firsthand information. The text and the photograph captions are enriched by incorporation of this knowledge.
