In 1945 a book was published entitled" Not in Vain". In it a number of inhabitants of the municipality of Renkum reminisced about the stirring days in September 1944. One story, "A Red-Cross Aid Post" was written by Mrs. Kate ter Horst-Arriëns. It was separately published in England in 1954 under the title Cloud over Arnhem". Both publications have been long out of print.

The Society of Friends of the Airborne Museum considers it a great privilege to be allowed to reprint Mrs. Ter Horst's contribution.
The publication is supplemented by a reprint of the first Dutch account of the military aspects of the airborne landings and a recollection of the medical orderly in charge who was responsible for the wounded in the Ter Horst family home. Both articles were written by Mr. J. ter Horst.

General Sir Frank King GCB, MBE, a captain at the time, spent a few days in the Aid Post after he had been wounded and has since been a good friend of the Ter Horsts. He spontaneously wrote the foreword which is both informative and moving. The board of the Society of Friends is very much obliged to the General. They also gratefully acknowledge the support and co-operation of those without whom publication of this book would not have been possible.

Jan Arriëns has made a new English translation of Mrs. Ter Horst's story and Mr. Chris van Roekel adapted the Dutch text to the current spelling. Mr. Adrian Groeneweg translated the foreword by General King and the other contributions into Dutch or English.
In close co-operation with the Ter Horst family he and Messrs. Rinke Fennema and Chris van Roekel saw this book through the press. Ms. Truus Oosterhaar tirelessly and accurately carried out the large amount of typing involved. Messrs. Wim de Ruyter and Robert Voskuil admirably reproduced the photographs.

After the war Mrs. Ter Horst was idolized as "The Angel of Arnhem", a name she refused to accept. Modest as she was, she always pointed to all those others who had acted likewise. May this book keep alive the memory of the courage shown by women of Oosterbeek and of the whole area where the battle raged. May it remain a symbol of their courage and unselfishness, their devotion to and their care for those wounded men who came down to liberate us.

Drs. J Smits, Chairman of the Society of Friends of the Airborne museum.
