The 55th commemoration of the battle for Arnhem and the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Airborne Museum are suitable occasions to pay attention to a unique event during World War II: the largest escape by soldiers from enemy-occupied territory. It was made by soldiers of the 1st British Airborne Division across the river Rhine in October 1944. It was followed by a second attempt in November which sadly failed. Operations Pegasus I and II are little known.

Therefore this corrected reprint by Major Tatham Warter's memoir, supplemented with a Dutch translation and additional information on Pegasus II. The Board of Trustees of the Airborne Museum ownes many thanks to the editors and translators for their efforts and their research to obtain new information which make this book fascinating to read. I am also sincerely grateful to Mrs Jane Tatham Warter who gave permission to produce both editions.

The publication coincides, not surprisingly, with the annual exhibition on a special subject, in which this year the preparation and the execution of the Pegasus operations are shown and, above all the exemplary courage of the many Dutch civilians who hid about 300 soldiers and airmen at the risk of their lives and those of their families, in a number of cases until the end of the Second World War.

I quote part of the text on the monument near the entrance of the Airborne Museum: 'This stone marks our admiration for your great courage remembering especially the women who tended our wounded. In the long winter that followed your families risked death by hiding Allied soldiers and airmen, while members of the Resistance helped many to safety'.

I wholeheartedly agree.
