Spanning the years of Admiral Lord Nelson's celebrated lifetime, this almanac is a glorious jumble of facts and events brought together as a primer for the aspiring student of Nelson's era. Serious effort has gone into its creation: the articles are original, the research is thorough, some of the artwork hitherto unpublished and the treatment is unique.

Essentially, the book has three basic elements. It is biographical, with lively and provocative articles written by some of the most respected modem-day Nelson experts and writers. It is a book of his letters, with Nelson himself giving us first hand information of his experiences. And it is also an historical document encompassing revolution, invasion and war, discovery, invention and cultural achievement.

These elements have been woven together to produce a kaleidoscopic tapestry of the period. Structured as a diary, each month is prefaced with a relevant article scrutinising an aspect of Nelson's life or naval career by one of the contributory authors. Days of the week follow, each with a date for Nelson together with a date in history between 1758 and 1805. Certain events are given greater coverage in short articles and captioned illustrations, which appear on the opposite page to the diary entry.

An excellent way to learn about Nelson is to read his letters. In order to reveal more of the man than the main articles can provide, I have, with irreverent liberty, chosen a few words or lines from his papers for all the Nelson dates. Where there are no recorded letters, log or journal entries for a particular day, I have taken extracts from letters to him. These simple extracts illuminate the agility of his mind, his grasp of maritime and world events, his attention to the finest detail, his passions, his fears and his frustrations.

A few brief notes on the subject of time may be prudent here. Obviously, it is only in the broad daylight of history that we can discern a sensible pattern in the otherwise haphazard arrangement of past events, but there are the more practical difficuties to be encountered. For instance, time varies from place to place. An Englishman and a Frenchman will record the same event a few minutes, per degree, apart in, say, Greenwich and Paris. More seriously, the Admiralty changed date at noon. Authors were often without accurate information to hand, and sometimes took days over a letter that was then ifirther delayed by the passage of the mail boat which was prey to all sorts of mischief en route. In addition, Nelson habitually wrote in similar terms to several addressees, often days, weeks or even months apart. Time then, did not so much fly, as loiter and stumble from place to place.

I might also add this last proviso: any anthology by definition, let alone necessity, excludes far more than it can possibly include. The parameters of Nelson's life and death, however, provide a good deal of scope. The ftirther the reader delves into the book, the more he or she will find. Individual dates throughout the book will piece together the jigsaw of a particular episode in history, such as the American War of Independence, the French Revolution, and the rise of Napoleon. Furthermore it is possible to see how the different threads of history interweave and in some cases affect the outcome of related events.
