Airborne Memorial Service 1944-2009 (2e-hands)

Op 25 september 1945 vond op de Airborne begraafplaats in Oosterheek de eerste officiële herdenkingsdienst plaats, ter nagedachtenis van de gevallenen in de Slag om Arnhem. Ook anno 2009, 65 jaar na dato, vormt de Airborne Memorial Service voor vele duizenden nog altijd het hoogtepunt van de jaarlijkse herdenkingen in september. In het boek 'Airborne Memorial Service' worden herinneringen opgehaald aan deze herdenking. De auteur sprak met tal van mensen die betrokken zijn of waren bij de organisatie, oud-burgemeesters, veteranen, nabestaanden, voorgangers, burgers uit de regio en kinderen die bloemen legden tijdens de dienst. Het boek bevat vele unieke foto's die het bijzondere karakter van deze herdenking illustreren, zoals foto's van leden van het Britse en Nederlandse koninklijk buis die aanwezig waren.

The first official memorial service took place at the Airborne Cemetery in Oosterbeek on 25 September 1945, to mark those who had fallen in the Battle of Arnhem. Still now, 65 years on in 2009, the Airborne Memorial Service remains for many thousands of people the high point of the annual commemorations in September. Airborne Memorial Service draws on memories from those commemorations. The author has spoken with numerous people who are or were involved in the organisation of the event, former burgomasters, veterans, next-of-kin, clergy who led the service, local citizens, and children who laid flowers during the service. The book contains many unique photographs illustrating the special nature of these commemorations, including pictures of members of the British and Dutch royal families who were present.
